Gates: a portait in academic arrogance

I work near a large Ivy League university so I can spot rude, arrogant, elitist attitude a mile away. People who think they’re so important that they can’t bother to be courteous.

The Henry Louis Gates, Jr. affair really has nothing to do with race. It has a lot more to do with class. What we have here is an elitist academic who can’t deign to lower himself to be polite, answer the police officer’s questions, and clarify that, indeed, there was no break-in at his residence.

Instead, Gates started to accuse the police officer with the very first words out of his mouth.

The arrogance comes through in the matter-of-fact police report.

The fact that the President of the United States weighed in on this case without knowing the facts makes it even more disturbing.

What’s up with Morning Joe?

How come I never see Pat Buchanan on MSNBC’s Morning Joe anymore? What’s up? He and Joe Scarborough are the reason I watch the show. It’s the only political show that I faithfully watch on MSNBC.

I’ve switched to Fox and Friends.

Kudos to Rush Limbaugh!

Kudos to Rush Limbaugh. Last weekend’s CPAC speech–his “first national address”–was great.

Rush is smart, funny and right about a lot of things. It’s sad that some people don’t get his humor. But, you know what–it’s their loss.

The Obama administration’s attempt to use Rush Limbaugh to divide the Republican party is a sad, desperate move. And it’s not going to work.

Stimulus bill and Obama’s campaign promises

I really don’t see the stimulus bill as a victory for President Obama. One reason is: the bill does not reflect the campaign promises that we heard so much about. Rich Lowry is correct:

As far as political arguments go, “I won” has its power-provided it’s made on behalf of an agenda ratified by the American electorate. But Obama didn’t campaign on a sprawling, nearly $1 trillion new spending plan. If he had pledged in October to double federal domestic discretionary spending in a matter of weeks-including increasing the budget of the National Endowment for the Arts by a third, spending hundreds of millions more on federal buildings and throwing tens of billions on every traditional liberal priority from job training to Pell Grants-he’d have been hard-pressed to win at all.

The president should read the transcript of the third presidential debate. He claimed his program represented “a net spending cut.” He called himself “a strong proponent of pay-as-you-go. Every dollar that I’ve proposed, I’ve proposed an additional cut so that it matches.” He added, “We need to eliminate a whole host of programs that don’t work.”

Let’s face it. We’re all figuring out that the stimulus package is a dud.

So, hopefully it will get overhauled and as several political commentators have suggested: Larry Summers advice will be heeded. That is: enacting a “timely, targeted and temporary fiscal stimulus…”

Standing up against the stimulus plan

I took a break from political blogging after the election. But now have found a reason to jump back in: the stimulus plan. President Obama and the Democrats in Congress are pushing through a stimulus plan that looks like it will be very detrimental for our country.

I’m glad the House Republicans voted unanimously against this plan last week. It’s time to stand up against the stimulus plan and ask for some real “change we can believe in.”

Election 2008: mainstream media the big losers

I was happy to vote yesterday. And even though I didn’t vote for him, I’m glad that I live in a free country and that we have a new President-Elect, Barack Obama.

But, last night one of the political commentators said that we really don’t know Barack Obama. Well, who’s fault is that? The mainstream media did not examine Obama’s Illinois State Senate record, his U.S. Senate record, his work as a professor, etc. I found out more about Obama’s background and political record listening to conservative talk radio and reading political blogs. (You know, I bet the average American relies on the mainstream media to be informed.) So, I thought this was the ultimate disingenuous comment.

The big losers in this presidential campaign are the mainstream media. Thank God we have alternative means of communication!

Why is it that the non-politicians: Joe the Plumber and Sgt. Joe Cook speak with more clarity and cut straight to the core issues better than the candidates themselves?

Not only did an average American weigh in: he’s being heard.

The phenom coming out to the third and final presidential debate is an average American speaking his mind: Joe the Plumber. The guy is articulate and he’s raising an important issue: Obama will be increasing taxes on small businesses. This is very anti-growth. Not only that: we heard Senator Obama tell Joe that he’s going to “spread the wealth around.” Okay, small business owners can spread the wealth around all on their own. They don’t need the government doing it for them. Kudos to Joe for speaking his mind!
